Tic

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

A tic is a compulsive, sudden, repetitive sound, twitch or movement that is often difficult to control.

There are 3 tic disorders:

  1. Tourette Syndrome: This is a neurological disorder characterized by sudden, repetitive, rapid and unwanted movements or vocal sounds. The tics must be present for >1 year to be diagnosed. There is no cure but treatments manage symptoms.

  2. Persistent Motor or Vocal Disorder: This is characterized by the presence of single or multiple motor tics or vocal tics, not both.

  3. Provisional Tic Disorder: This is characterized by either a motor or vocal tic or both that have been present for < 1 year.

Tics can run in families or happen alongside ADHD, OCD or autoimmune infections. The exact cause is unknown.

Tics are treated with medication and behavior intervention as stress often triggers them.

Speech Therapists do not provide treatment for tics directly; treatment is best provided by psychologists, psychiatrists and specialist physicians.
