Speech Therapy in a Nutshell!

Updated: Jun 5, 2022

The Speech Therapist deals with COMMUNICATION.

So, any delay or deviance in communication, verbal or non-verbal and we are there to assist as part of the education team.

Pronunciation

This is a large area that Speech Therapists deal with. Errors in pronunciation include articulation and phonology. Articulation is the way speech sounds are produced. Phonological processes are the means by which children simplify speech sounds to make them more manageable; and this is when a child is generally unintelligible; as he/she has numerous errors in their phonology.

Stuttering

Voice

This deals with problems with pitch, intonation, volume and clarity e.g. vocal nodules as a result of vocal abuse, such as excessive yelling.

Semantics vs Syntactics

Semantics is the Meaning e.g. understanding opposites, associations, absurdity, definitions.

where as Syntactics is the Grammar which involves the complex process of combining sounds to form different words which are arranged in a specific order within sentences.

Pragmatics (use)

This involves the child’s ability to give a coherent description of events during conversation. It involves awareness of appropriate language in a situational context and the ability to modify this language if necessary. It involves using eye contact, requesting clarification and keeping to the topic

Auditory and Processing Abilities

This involves hearing, discriminating, assigning significance to and interpreting spoken words phrases, clauses, sentences and discourse. Auditory processing difficulties underlie reading, writing and spelling difficulties and will affect all language-based learning and general classroom performance e.g. following instructions. Areas include discrimination, synthesis, analysis, comprehension, reasoning, memory.

School therapists work with children individually and in small groups and co-teach or teach lessons within the classroom with the teacher. Our goal is to improve how well a child learns and performs in the classroom.
