Bath time is the perfect time to spend quality time with your toddler. You are in a confined environment so it's the ideal space to work on speech, vocabulary and language skills.
It uses routines that use the same vocabulary and give your child the chance to hear the same words repeatedly so that it becomes predictable.
1.Sing or repeat a rhyme during bath time and once your child has learnt it, pause and give them a chance to participate e.g., row, row, row your boat.
2. Narrate your child's play. Start by labeling items in the bath e.g., water, soap, shampoo, bubbles, sponge, toy boat and various body parts. Talk about what you are doing.
3.Use bath toys to learn prepositions e.g., over, under, beside, on top, behind and narrate what you have said e.g., The duck is under the water. The visual and tactile cues help learning. Get your child to repeat what you have said.
4. Buy bath books as these keep your child entertained and help improve speech, vocabulary and language.
5. Blow bubbles and draw attention to your mouth when you say, "pop." Bubbles can be used to target words like, "more," "big/small" and "blow" as well as phrases e.g., " more bubbles."
